Cynthia Barton, 2nd time Mom and National Customer Service & Accounts Manager for KET- takes great care of herself during this pregnancy!

What was your reaction to this pregnancy? "I was very excited as we had planned to have this second child. The day I found out I was at the doctor’s office with a sinus infection and told them I could be pregnant. They gave me a pregnancy test and it was positive. Since they didn’t know if I would be excited or not they were a little concerned to give me the results. The nurse was so relieved when I was excited. As soon as she left the room I called my husband and gave him the good news."

Do you have any advice for women in early pregnancy? "Get on a prenatal vitamin ASAP and make sure to take folic acid. Don’t let pregnancy be the excuse to eat more food. Eat healthy. After all, the baby does not need a lot of calories until the third trimester. And then they don’t need 2-3 desserts a day."

Have you had any struggles during this pregnancy? "Yes, I have had some blood pressure problems and some blood glucose problems. It’s very important to go to all your scheduled visits. For my blood pressure I have watched sodium intake and am drinking lots of water."

Was this pregnancy at all similar to your first? "It is similar however there are some differences. Last time I was on bed rest for 2 months and this time I’m currently 36 weeks and still working. The difference is how I have approached this pregnancy. As soon as I started experiencing higher blood pressure I acted quickly to reduce the effects. I watched my sodium intake, took DHA and my blood pressure meds, rested more at home, and generally tried to take better care of myself."

Any helpful resources that you would like to share? "My favorite website is www.babycenter.com. This time I did not read much in my pregnancy book; however I glanced the Pregnancy Week by Week. I also looked in the Baby in the Bluegrass for ideas and suggestions."

How you have prepared for this baby? " I talked with our first child to explain all that is involved with a new baby. I think he is ready for the addition of a baby and not a “friend”. It’s very important to explain what’s about to happen to a preschooler. That way they don’t have anxiety."

Any plans for maternity leave? "My employer is flexible and we have discussed me working up until I can’t work any more. Then I plan to take approximately 8 weeks off."
