Today is the birthday of Jackie Powell - publisher of Baby in the Bluegrass. Here are 4 things we love about Jackie!

1. Her creative streak. Jackie is an amazing designer. Her artistic hand and eye lend themselves to everything she does. From scrapbooking to publications, everything she touches turns to gorgeous!

2. Her spontaneity and willingness to do her own thing. Jackie gets involved in numerous activities. From Zumba - Yoga - Running – Bookclub - Painting - to making aprons, she is not scared to try anything new. Her motto: ”If it’s not fun, don’t do it!”

3. Her compassion and passion for people in need. Jackie’s willingness to help others and put them first is one of her strongest traits. She has a huge heart for The Lighthouse Ministries. She spends alot of her time creating projects for this cause.

4. Her sense of humor. If you know Jackie, you know that there is not a day when she won’t make you smile, whether it’s her favorite SNL skit, the latest story about her husband or two boys, or her bathroom humor – you will surely be laughing out loud!

Breastfeeding – Doraine Bailey's article…

“Everyone has a breastfeeding story. At parties when I mention what I do as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, women and men will tell me their experiences as parents or grandparents, as bystanders, as breastfed children. Some are still grieving or angry that their experience did not meet their expectations, that the medical profession had let them down. Others apologize that they ‘only breastfed’ for a few short days or weeks. Some tell the heroic stories of their wives and partners who breastfed or pumped in the face of health difficulties, public disparagement, and work site harassment. A few express their disgust with the entire idea of breastfeeding and the rudeness or crudeness they see modeled by breastfeeding mothers and babies…”

“…I’m astonished at the pediatrician who counsels a motivated mother to start formula rather than referring her for help. I’m shocked at the business that forces employees to pump milk in their parked cars. I’m saddened at the childcare provider who won’t allow the mother to breastfeed her child on-site but will allow her to feed with a bottle. I’m angry at the restaurant who forces the paying customer to leave without eating rather than soothe the hungry baby by breastfeeding. I’m upset with the husband who does not want the baby to be breastfed because his wife’s breasts “belong to him.” I’m mortified at the congregation that views breastfeeding as sexually deviant rather than the moral behavior promoted in the Old Testament.” – Doraine Bailey.

LEXINGTON TODDLER TROUPE – Meets Fridays, 10:30am

Christina Moore has recently started a new local playgroup for mothers with children ages 1-4 years old. The playgroup was created so that children could socialize and play, as well as provide an opportunity for moms to socialize with one another.

Currently, the group has been meeting at parks, allowing the kids to play. As the group grows–plans will be added for more “events” like trips to the explorium, craft activities and such. Also, there are plans for moms night out and family get togethers.

Spring Clean…your email

IT’S THAT DREADFUL TIME!

Or, if you are anything like me, you look forward to it. I admit it, I actually LIKE cleaning. It makes me feel organized and perks my brain into thinking I have a fresh new start. OK, I am not ready to be the new “lemon-fresh clean commercial” spokesperson yet, but you get my drift.

While cleaning out my closet, – I thought, I should clean up my emails as well.

First – I sat down and opened my email accounts – some of you may have multiple ones too. I opened the address book/contact lists. I deleted old email addresses (previous co-workers who don’t work there anymore, maybe an old boyfriend’s email, addresses that always “kick-back” when you send on forwards, etc.)

Next – I UNSUBSCRIBED – to some of those marketing emails that I receive in truck loads. It’s not that I don’t appreciate their email, simply put – they just don’t pertain to my everyday life. I encourage you to do the same – go through your email – actually OPEN all of the emails and UNSUBSCRIBE or change the settings on when you receive them. Some give you the option of receiving once every 6 months or bi-monthly. Choose what you want. You are in control!

I have noticed that my normal 25-minute “sift-through” email routine is down to about 5-10 minutes. It feels good to clean!

My husband forwarded this article to me from NPR yesterday. I found it pretty interesting. My first thought was, “Is he trying to tell me something?” Then it occurred to me that maybe HE was relieved to learn that he married a pretty normal person. I think he had some doubts the day I screamed out “Now, I have to actually use the vacuum cleaner to get the crumbs off the floor since the dog passed away!”
